Baptisms

Baptism is one of those Christian practices over which followers of Jesus have different understandings. Within Reformed Theology (i.e. the biblical understanding of God which guides and informs our congregation and pastors) Baptism is a sacrament. It was established by Christ as an ongoing activity of the church, and through the experience of baptism, we believe God offers a special grace. It’s both a symbol, or sign, of our faith and God’s faithfulness, and a seal, or a signature, stating that God is at work in our lives.

Our celebration of baptism for both adults and children flows from our understanding that God is the primary actor in the sacrament. Baptism is less dependent on our faith and more dependent on God’s faithfulness. It signifies our becoming part of God’s covenant community, or the family of believers established and united by God’s grace. It proclaims our need for God’s forgiveness and celebrates Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross on our behalf.

Since God is the prime mover in baptism, the amount of water becomes secondary. We typically sprinkle water on children and adults during baptism, but are also open to full immersion.
