New To Faith

New To Faith?

I have questions about faith, Jesus, and the Bible.

You’ve come to the right place; we have questions too! We’re all just learners, probably asking many of the same questions you’re asking. We’re discovering answers together in and through classes, small groups, and the teaching by our pastoral staff. Feel free to participate in one of our Bible studies or small groups. Current options are described in our Newscaster.

You are always welcome to set up a time with one of our pastors to explore any particular questions of faith you might have. Simply call our church office and arrange a convenient time (402-558-2330).

I’ve just accepted Christ as my Savior; now what?

Congratulations! Telling Jesus that you accept him as the Leader of your life and the one who sets you right with God is the single most powerful thing anyone can ever do—and it’s free! Let us encourage you to share your decision with someone else who also follows Jesus. If you don’t know of anyone offhand, feel free to call the church (402-558-2330); we’d love to hear your story. It’s super important to take the next step of putting yourself in close proximity to others who follow Jesus so that you can be encouraged by them and they by you. Feel free to join in one of our Bible studies or small groups. Check out the Newscaster for the latest list of options. If you want to start reading the Bible, consider beginning with the Gospel of John—it’s the fourth book in the New Testament, and it’s pretty accessible. You can read it online here.

Reading Your Bible

The Bible is God’s word to us. It’s like an extended love letter, in which God teaches us about who God is, who we are, and what life is all about. It consists of two “Testaments.” The “Old Testament” consists of 39 “books” that were written well before the time of Jesus. The “New Testament” consists of 27 “books,” all of which were written within 60 years of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Given how old the Bible is and how many books it contains, readers today can be rather intimidated by it. A great place to start is with the Gospel of John—the fourth book found in the New Testament. It is a very readable journey into the life of Jesus. The short book of James provides practical instruction and is a super next step. Feel free to sit down and read these two books all the way through or to take them one chapter at a time. You might also consider simply reading the Bible text that will be preached on this weekend. You can find the sermon title and text in the Newscaster.

Come to worship.

Participating in worship is a central activity for followers of Christ. Meeting together gives us an opportunity to encourage one another, to focus our attention on God, and to learn together.

Participate in a small group.

Meeting in smaller groups provides the added advantage of asking real questions that you might have. In any small group within the church there are always some who know a little more than others. Together members of the group use outstanding resources to explore the teachings of the Bible. It’s also where you can get to know other members of our church family, and they can get to know you. Representing Jesus in the world.

You don’t need to attend any class or group to start representing Jesus in the world. When you said, “Yes,” to Jesus’ offer of love and forgiveness, you became one of his followers. The two main things that he asks of you are that you would love God and love others. In the Bible, “love” is more of an action than an emotion so showing kindness, being generous, and offering forgiveness are tangible examples of showing love. If someone asks you why you’re being so nice, simply tell them that you represent Jesus!

Participating in local mission.

All followers of God are “sent” people. From the beginning, God has sent his followers into the world to represent him. One of the best ways to build your own relationship with God is to join him in his work in the world. In any given month we have a number of service opportunities scheduled. To find out more about serving in one of our local mission opportunities click here.

Ask to meet with a pastor.

Our pastors enjoy meeting people who have agreed to let God be in charge of their lives. Don’t be intimidated by their titles. Like the rest of us, they too are learning more and more about God and doing their best to grow in faith and love. Give one a call (402-558-2330).
